HISTORY OF THE RED LION

The Red Lion was originally built using masonry from an adjacent building which was constructed during Cromwell's time. Markings can still be seen on the door frames which were used as a means of identifying a safe house for members of the Royalist party.

The building, which is one of Britain's 4% of Grade II listed buildings was extended during the late 18th and 19th century. Of particular architectural interest are the wattle and daub walls which are visible in part inside. Of historical note is the masonry, which was taken from the local derelict mansion owned by Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister and establisher of London Metropolitan Police Force from the corrupt Bow Street Runners.

The Red Lion is situated close to what was a low crossing point on the old drovers route and proved to be a popular stopping place on the arduous journey from the Welsh mountains to the London markets.
